Ralph Nader > Special Features > Readers Think and Thinkers Read—Book Recommendations for Holiday 2024

After years of selecting authors of excellent non-fiction books for public attention and action, I want to interest readers in a selection of my books that have stood the test of time. I believe that a box of books is better than “a box of chocolates.” These books make good gifts for young and older, for local libraries, and for teachers of social studies.

Here they are:

Breaking Through Power: It’s Easier Than We Think [City Lights Books, 2016]

“In this succinct, Tom Paine-style wake-up call, the iconic consumer advocate highlights the

success stories of fellow Americans who organize change and work together to derail the many ways in which wealth manipulates politics, labor, media, the environment, and the quality of national life today.”

Let’s Start the Revolution: Tools for Displacing the Corporate State and Building a Country that Works for the People [Skyhorse, 2024]

“Nader asks: How did the Democrats, despite winning the 2020 election, find themselves teetering on the edge of defeat? The answers, he finds, lie in the Democratic Party’s gradual decline into decrepitude—a self-isolation from blue-collar America, an unhealthy fixation on corporate funding, and an alarming aversion to introspection.”

Out of Darkness: Essays on Corporate Power and Civic Resistance 2012-2022 [Seven Stories, 2024]

“A collection of columns and essays that reveal Ralph Nader at his outspoken and prescient best, fighting the good fight against corporate corruption, unbalanced political power, consumer dangers, big pharma, and climate deniers.”

The Ralph Nader and Family Cookbook: Classic Recipes from Lebanon and Beyond [Akashic Books, 2020]

“Ralph Nader and his family share recipes inspired by his parents’ commitment to the healthy diet of their homeland of Lebanon.”

The Rebellious CEO: 12 Leaders Who Did It Right [Melville House, 2023]

“In a book that will surprise both his fans and critics, Nader profiles a small group of CEOs who he believes performed extraordinarily well as business leaders and civic reformers, some well-known, some not, who should be celebrated as exceptions whose life and career should be a course of emulation and inspiration for students of business, executives and the wider citizenry. “

The Seventeen Solutions: Bold Ideas for Our American Future [Harper, 2012]

“In these troubling times of intractable fiscal and social distress, Nader offers a new program to help rescue America: The Seventeen Solutions. His powerful, paradigm-shifting proposals address some of the most pressing concerns in our country today—from corporate crime to tax reform to health care and housing—and they should find a receptive audience not only among liberals, progressives, disillusioned Democrats, Rachel Maddow fans, and Occupy Wall Street supporters, but all concerned Americans.”

The Seventeen Traditions [Harper, 2007]

“Known for his lifetime of selfless activism, Nader now looks back to the earliest days of his own life, to his serene and enriching childhood in bucolic Winsted, Connecticut. From listening to learning, from patriotism to argument, from work to simple enjoyment, Nader revisits seventeen key traditions he absorbed from his parents, his siblings, and the people in his community, and draws from them inspiring lessons for today’s society.”

Unstoppable: The Emerging Left-Right Alliance to Dismantle the Corporate State [Nation Books, 2014]

“Nader shows how Left-Right coalitions can prevail over the corporate state and crony capitalism.”
